POST: PROJECT OFFICER

Introduction

The Uganda Textbook Academic and Nonfiction Authors Association (UTANA), in partnership with the Norwegian Non-Fiction Writers and Translators Association (NFFO), Uganda Reproduction Rights Organization (URRO), and Uganda Publishers Association (UPA) is implementing a four-year joint project entitled “Capacity Building for Schoolbook Project (CB-SP) with the Department of Teacher Education Training and Development (TETD) under the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES). The Goal of CB-SP is to develop a local educational publishing industry that is skilled, sustainable, and capable of serving the needs of primary and secondary education in Uganda. The project is overseen  by a Project Steering Committee (PSC), which ensures effective implementation with support from a Project Coordinator (PC), partner representative and a Ministry Focal Point Person (FPP). 

To meet her objectives, UTANA seeks to recruit a Project Officer to oversee the day-to-day management of the schoolbook project.

Job Title: Project Officer

Job Purpose:

The Project Officer shall be responsible for managing the schoolbook project activities on a day to day basis on behalf of the Project Steering Committee. The Project Officer reports directly to the Project Coordinator.

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Schedule activities, monitor the progress of activities, liaise with project partners on the implementation of activities, ensure regular updates to the PC on progress of activities; 
  • Ensuring reports are prepared and submitted; preparing daily, weekly and activity reports,  perform assignments from the PSC with minimal supervision; 
  • Plan and prepare meetings, act as secretary during meetings keep  and disseminate minutes and reports  accordingly;
  • Plan training sessions and share training materials with  participants; 
  • Monitor the effective utilisation of project funds allocated to  partners; 
  • Ensure timely monitoring and evaluation of project activities  as directed by the PSC. 
  • Communicating with writers on project activities and what is required of or expected from them.
  • Document and report to the PC on daily and activity basis on the performance and achievement of deliverables.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification from a recognized University or institution. 
  • Demonstrated skills and competences in project management, communication skills and technical writing competences and/or training of trainers.
  • A Post Graduate qualification with demonstrated skills in education foundations or management, publishing and book trade, Project Planning and Management, Writing and Reading Development, Evaluation review and monitoring have added advantage. 

. Skills and Competencies

    • Ability to work effectively and independently and as part of a team with diverse stakeholders;
    • Competence in fundable project proposal writing and managing collaborative projects;
    • Strong financial and analytical skills with the ability to produce and discuss credible reports. 
    • Understanding  the needs of the book sector stakeholders and functions including authorship, publishing, book trade and book distribution and Copyright.
    • Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills, with the ability to develop these and others; 
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to meet deadlines effectively

Experience Required

  • A minimum of three years experience in  social enterprise development or non-profit management.;
  • Proven ability to work in a collaborative, income-generation, or research-focused environment involving multiple teams, and networks. 
  • Significant leadership experience in a business or social enterprise.
  • Demonstrated innovation, creativity and initiative in project development and implementation.
  • High integrity, accountability and transparency in  leadership. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Salary/Payment: The Salary for this position is negotiable based on the applicant’s competences and experience in in project operations.
