  1. Overview 

As part of efforts to localise and strengthen Uganda’s educational publishing sector, theCapacity Building for Schoolbooks Project (CB-SP) aims to identify and support anewgeneration of teacher-authors to develop quality, relevant and curriculum-alignedsupplementary learning materials. The project supports national education reforms andseeksto build long-term capacity for developing local content. This will contribute to better literacy, fairer learning outcomes, and improved access to educational materials that are relevant toUgandan learners. 

  1. Objective of the Call 

This call invites applications from 50 motivated teachers/authors across Uganda who will receive specialised training and mentorship in schoolbook development. Successful applicants will be supported to plan, draft, and refine high-quality supplementary materialsthat follow the frameworks set by the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC). 

  1. Who Should Apply

Applications are welcome from teachers in primary, lower secondary, or upper secondarylevels or non-teacher authors who meet the following criteria: 

Applicants must meet the following requirements; 

  1. Be a Ugandan citizen, 
  2. Be a teacher or a non-teacher who has previously written school booksat any level from primary to higher secondary education. As proof, thefollowing must be submitted:
    • Copy of Teacher Registration Certificate, OR
    • Evidence of the previous authorship in educational book materialsinUganda. 
  3. Be proficient in English and/or a relevant local language,
  4.  Have academic or professional qualifications relevant to the subject areaof interest, 
  5. Be available for a five-day residential training programme to be heldduringschool holidays. 
  6. Be a member of UTANA or willing to register prior to training,
  7.  Demonstrate a clear interest in developing a manuscript in linewiththeproject’s thematic areas:
    •  Local Languages.
    • Humanities and Social Studies (e.g. Religious Education, Geography),
    •  Creative Arts and Physical Education,
    •  Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM),
    •  Agriculture,
    •  Cross-cutting themes such as life skills, career guidance, andteachers’ guides. 
  8. Provide a brief explanation in the concept note of how the proposedbookwill: 
    • a) Improve learning outcomes, 
    • b) Support specific teaching approaches (e.g., learner-centred, activity-based), and 
    • c) Cater to diverse learner needs. 
  9. Ensure that the manuscript proposal aligns with the competency-basedcurriculum and subject syllabi of NCDC

  2.  A one-page concept note that includes: b) A proposed book idea and its intended learners, c) A brief explanation of how the book supports the NCDC curriculum, d) A note on how the book supports good teaching methods, such as learner-centredor inclusive teaching. 
  3. Ensure that the proposed idea aligns with the competency-based curriculumandsubject syllabi of NCDC”.


 5. What Participants Will Gain 

Selected teacher/authors will receive:: 

  • Practical training in manuscript development, editing, publishing standards and ethics, b) A deeper understanding of Uganda’s national curriculum and textbook development policies,
  •  Guidance on learner-centred pedagogy and inclusive education approaches, d) Access to publishing support to help finalise and publish the book for distribution inschools.

6. Selection Process 

Applications will be reviewed by a Project Steering Committee made up of experts fromUTANA, UPA, URRO, and MoES. Selection will be based on merit, with attention toregional representation, subject variety, gender balance, and urban-rural inclusion.

UTANA GRANT SCHEME FOR AUTHORS (UGSA) 2021

 

SECOND CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

 

Uganda Textbook Academic and Non-Fiction Authors Association (UTANA) in partnership with the Norwegian Association of Non-Fiction and Translators Association (NFFO) is implementing a 3 Year project (entitled UTANA Grant Scheme for Authors (UGSA) to support authors through their writing process. The grant will support authors (who are already in their writing process) for facilitation towards the completion of their publication/academic works. It is expected that at the end of the grant, a publication will be ready/available. This is the second round of the competitive grant scheme to benefit authors of academic and general non-fiction works.

 

Target: Authors of Textbooks, Academic and Non-fiction Works including but not limited to: scholarly works, academic textbooks/ scholarly articles, school textbooks, manuals, biographies/ autobiographies, expository, argumentative, functional, and opinion pieces; Nonfiction essays on art or literature, historical, scientific, technical, or economic writings works of general interest.

 

Eligibility: If you are currently working on a scholarly or a general non-fiction work and are a member of UTANA, you are eligible to apply. If you are not yet a member of UTANA, you can join at the same time as you submit your application. The grant is intended to provide a an average of Three Million (UGX) to be used for an author to take off time for instance, and devote herself or himself to complete the current writing project. UTANA encourages institutional book/publication with a minimum of 3 people (who are contributors to the publication and are members or willing to be members of UTANA).The grant will be paid out in portions justified by the applicant’s proposal following the Result Based Financing (RBF) model.

 

Selection Process: An Independent Selection Committee will assess the applications and select the most deserving applications. The successful selected candidates shall be approved by UTANA Executive Board, which shall give the award. There are three main criteria for eligibility: Membership of UTANA (and subscribed to the Writers-authors Investment Club), evidence of being engaged in a writing process and Justification that the manuscript shall be a publication available in book form (hard or e-book).Non UTANA members should submit their application together with the membership application Click here to access the UTANA membership form. The selection committee aims to offer awards to a wide-ranging group of authors and subjects and shall bear in mind authors writing in rural as well as urban locations; and may consider authors at all levels of education from the untutored to the highest level.. The UTANA Grant Scheme 2nd Call of Applications, 2021 particularly encourages new and upcoming authors to apply. Manuscripts/publications in all approved local languages shall be equally considered.
